Worst Things About Tours

Best Things About Tours

  • Great location in France
  • Well-connected to places all around the Loire Valley
  • The food! (Tours is known as an nternational city of gastronomy, after all!)
  • The friendly locals
  • Close proximity to châteaux of the Loire Valley
  • Charming and "classic French" people are very warm and helpful
  • About an hour from Paris

  • Public transportation usually limited and infrequent
  • Not many attractions in Tours itself
  • No good Mexican food (must go to Paris for that!)
  • Dog poop scattered on the sidewalks
  • There's a Burger King and a Starbucks

Pro-Tips from Past + Current Teaching Assistants

  • Have fun! Tours is a great city to work in! Take advantage of each moment here in France because the time will pass much too quickly!!
  • Unless you're going to be working in Tours itself, get a place near the train station (or at least the tramway) in the city + commute from there.
  • Apply ONLINE for the CAF as soon as you arrive! One assistant waited a few months before going to the CAF office and since she hadn't already applied, it was impossible to reimburse her for the preceding months she was already in France because she was not in the system.
  • About bus travel in France - it's the cheapest means to travel, but you must buy tickets well in advance to take advantage of the good prices. If you buy a ticket a few days before you leave, you'll pay much more!
  • For travel in the surrounding area, the car-sharing website BlaBlaCar is the way to go!
  • Rent a bike from Velociti.
  • Get a loyalty card at an Auchan grocery store.
